The Dugout

Hello everyone the following dimension are for the baseball dugout using the Graphic 45 line Good Ol' Sport. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email or you can use our Ustream class videos as a reference they are available on Ustream for 30 days and they are moved to my you tube channel within a week of recording. There are links on my blog home page to both on the right hand side of the screen. If you follow me on you tube you will also be notified when i upload a new video. Once on you tube click on my playlist tab then click on the dugout tab and there you will find the class construction videos. Enjoy and  Happy Crafting!

What you will need to construct the dug out:

1. 6 sheets of 12x12 heavy weight chipboard (i used black).
2. Score tape
3. A lot of  1.5x12 scored down the middle at 3/4 of an inch construction strips and i match the color of the      card stock to the color of my chipboard. It will give you a polished look.

........ And that is all you need to construct the shell of the dugout. Let's craft.
Note: i write all of my dimensions in width and then depth or height.

Section 1 Measurements and Cuts

Step 1 the floor of the dug out:
-Start with a 12x12 piece of chipboard and cut to 10 inches wide by 8 in. deep

-The next part of step 1 is to write front and back on your project. It will keep you focused on the position of the rest of your construction.

-The next part of step 1 is to rotate your chipboard floor piece 1/4 turn to the left and measure 3 3/4 of and inch from the front of the dug out. Now mark it with pencil and draw an line all the way up. This crates the guide line for you inner wall which is the back of the front opening of the dug out and divides the actual dugout from the mini album.

-Now you are ready to move on to step 2 cutting the middle wall.

Step 2 cutting the middle wall:
-Start with a 12x12 piece if chipboard and cut to 10 inches wide by 7 inches tall. Please keep in mind the 10 inch wide measurement will be trimmed down by around 1/16th of an inch to 1/8th of an inch to account for your side walls. For all of you that have seen the video i am talking a skidge. lol

-Now you are ready to move to step 3 cutting the back wall

Step 3 cutting the back wall:
-Start with a 12x12 piece if chipboard and cut to 10 inches wide by 7 inches tall. Please keep in mind the 10 inch wide measurement will be trimmed down by around 1/16th of an inch to 1/8th of an inch to account for your side walls. For all of you that have seen the video i am talking a skidge. lol

-Now you are ready to move on to step 4 cutting your left side wall.

Step 4 cutting your left side wall (note i am talking about the wall to your left as the dugout would be facing you).
-Start with a 12x12 piece of chipboard and cut to8 inches deep by 9 1/2 inches tall. As you look at your chipboard the left side will be the front of the dugout and the right will be the back of the dugout. Wright front and back on your chipboard to keep your construction orientation. As shown in picture.

-The next step of part 4 is to measure from the left side  (front) over to 3 and 3/4th of  an inch and make a mark.

-The next step of part 4 it to take that mark and draw a line from bottom to top. Do not erase this line it will serve you as a guide line.

-The next part of step 4 is to measure along the right side edge up to 7 inches and make a mark. Now rotate your paper 1/4 a turn to your left and draw a line from your back wall to your front.

-The next part of step 4 is to rotate your page back to facing  you. At the intersecting point where the middle wall and the line you have just drawn, draw another line from that intersecting point to the very top left corner as shown in the picture below.

-The next step of part 4 is to remove the shaded area in the picture below.

-Now your left outside wall is complete and we can move onto step 5 cutting your right side wall.

Step 5 cutting the right side wall  (note i am talking about the wall to your right as the dugout would be facing you).
-The 1st step of part 5 is the mirrored step in part 4 Start with a 12x12 piece of chipboard and cut to8 inches deep by 9 1/2 inches tall. As you look at your chipboard the right side will be the front of the dugout and the left will be the back of the dugout. Wright front and back on your chipboard to keep your construction orientation. As shown in picture.

-The next step of part 5 is to measure from the right side  (front) over to 3 and 3/4th of  an inch and make a mark.

-The next step of part 5 is to take that mark and draw a line from bottom to top. Do not erase this line it will serve you as a guide line.

-The next part of step 5 is to measure along the left side edge up to 7 inches and make a mark. Now rotate your paper 1/4 a turn to your left and draw a line from your back wall to your front.

-The next part of step 5 is to rotate your page back to facing  you. At the intersecting point where the middle wall and the line you have just drawn, draw another line from that intersecting point to the very top right corner as shown in the picture below.

-The next step of part 5 is to remove the shaded area in the picture below.

-Now your right outside wall is complete and we can move onto step 6 cutting your 2 roof pieces.

Step 6 cutting your 2 roof pieces ( note the 2 pieces vary in size and are specific to front of the dugout and back of the dugout so [please mark them accordingly).

-The first step of part 6 is to cut the front side roof piece this is the piece of chip board that covers the dugout and lays on the peak. Start with a 12x12 piece of chipboard and make 1 cut at 6 1/4 inch. So this piece will measure 12 inches wide by 6 1/4 inches deep there will be an inch over hang on either side of the dugout walls and front and back.

-The next step of part 6 is to cut the back roof section now from that remaining piece of chipboard that you cut the first roof piece from make your next cut at 5 inches. so you will have a finished cut that is 12 inches wide by 5 inches deep

-Now your roof is complete. All of the cutting and measurements to construct this dugout are done so lets build a dug out. Move on to section 2 construction.

Section 2 Construction**************************************************************

-For the construction phase you will begin with your base with the front facing you

-The next step is to attach both of your outer walls with the peak on the front side of the dug out as shown in picture below. Use the 1 1/2 inch hinges to adhere all pieces down. Also set your walls on top of your base at the edge run a bead of glue on the bottom of the wall and adhere down as shown NOTE your walls may not stay up on there own this is ok once we get the middle wall in they will be firmly in place .

-The next step is to put in your middle wall. now this middle wall may need to be trimmed down on the width no more than 1/8th of an inch or so just start by taking a very little off the edge at a time so it will fit nicely between your 2 walls. now you will need to run a bead of glue on the bottom and sides of this middle wall follow the guidelines you created during cutting both on the side walls and the middle of your base to give you a perfectly aligned wall. Now use your construction strips to secure down and hold in place but make sure you put strips on both the front and back sides of the middle wall as well as the base this is important.

-The next step is to put your back wall on using the same steps as the middle wall you will run a bead of glue on the bottom and both sides and adhere in place  but remember you may need to cut the wall down just as was done for the middle wall below are the pictures of those steps

-The next step in construction is to add the roof we will start with the front roof the one that covers the peak. On the underside of the roof draw a line at both ends that is 1 inch in from the sides as shown in the picture this will be roof guidelines. On the underside of the roof you will need to hinge down the middle first on front and back in the middle and only hinge NO GLUE .

-The next step will be to put your paper on the under side of the roof before adhering it to the peak walls i will not be papering this step but once you have put paper down on the underside you will then run a bead of glue (a glue that is strong and dries clear) along the peak portion of your walls. Now gently and be sure not to wiggle lay your roof onto the peaks and hold firmly in place to get a good hold. NOTE clean up all glue spillage promptly there are no hinges used on the peak portion on the roof

-Final step is to Hinge on your back roof. Line up your back roof edges with the front roof edges again you are using no wet glue only hinges. Next you will run a hinge on top of the back roof and hinge to the front roof . once that is done your dugout will be complete. now all you will have left to do is paper the rest . Just as a note in the preparation of this pattern i used substandard chipboard and left over hinges as this was just a sample build for pattern purposes only .

Now you must continue on with the videos that are on ustream and you tube if you would like to paper as i have. However you can always make this your own and paper as you please enjoy and happy crafting.
